· We have completed arrangements to have all attendees make lodging resevations at NAS Key West. The most important thing decided was that everyone needs to make their own reservations now.
Attached in the Lodging section here is the info you need to make your reservations.
· Chuck has put on facebook at http://www.facebook.com/groups/113732458675354/ what he needs every attendee and his or her guests to complete for the security from to premit base access. That info is also on our web site here as well.
April 18 2013
“The NAS KW and the committee are still the various details of the NAS KW support for our reunion. Discussions this week indicate that we should be able to have the Registration Package, lodging instructions, and security forms available through our web site within a few weeks. We continued to be assured that sufficient rooms have been blocked for our participants. The committee appreciates everyone's patience. .”
The Reunion Committee.
April 11 2013
“The reunion committee is still working on the details necessary to get the registration and lodging reservation process out to those interested in attending. NAS Key West should have the necessary information available for us by 19 April. All are reminded that NAS has blocked rooms at both the MWR facilities and the Gateway facilities sufficient to handle all of our requirements. We appreciate everyone’s patience as we put together the package for dissemination.”
The Reunion Committee.
March 13 2013
After careful consideration of the response received from those expressing interest in attending the reunion, and discussion of schedule alternatives with NAS Officials, and the Key West Chamber of Commerce, the committee decided that staying the course with the original Reunion dates of 20-23 Sept. was the most viable alternative.
The Reunion Committee.
March 3 2013
IMPORTANT REUNION ANNOUNCEMENT: We found out last week that our reunion is taking place the same weekend as the Key West Poker Run. This means the Island will be packed with bikers. If you are planning on staying at a hotel in town(not MWR rentals ) you need to make your reservations NOW. Please pass this info along to anyone you are in contact with.
Feb 10 2013
Per NAS Key West, lodging reservations may be made on or about April 1. Keep an eye out for updated information on this as well as participant required Security Forms and Reunion Reservation forms which will include reunion costs.
The reunion committee met (via conference call) with NAS Key West MWR and Security Directors on 7 February. The reunion planning continues on track. MWR Director will be providing us the procedures to make reservations at their 3 facilities (Gateway, Town Houses, and Mobile Homes). It is anticipated that participants can start making reservations on, or about, 1 April. In the near future, Chuck Shannon (reunion committee member) will be sending out Security Forms that will have to be filled out by those not having valid Government ID cards. The reunion committee is now developing the “reunion Registration” forms. This from will include the reunion costs. 141 people have expressed an interest in attending at this time, so we are planning on 250 total, including guests, for the purposes of determining reunion costs.
Jan 2013
We also request that anyone who has pictures or other memorabilia that might be shared/displayed at the reunion provide them to Chuck Shannon (chucke68@aol.com)
Additional information is posted on the IHS web site:

Watch this website. We will add more detail to it as we proceed with our plans.
Jan 2013
For clarification, each participant will be responsible for making their own reservations. The committee is working with MWR to enable ALL participants, those eligible and those normally not, to stay at both MWR and Gateway facilities. The Key West Navy Lodge is not included in these arrangements. We are going to be confirming these procedures later in January and then posting them on this web site. Reservations will be accepted only after all these arrangements have been made, so don’t try to make them at this time.
Part of the process will be for all participants to fill out security forms. These forms will be posted on the web site soon. It is critical that all participants who do not carry valid government ID cards fill out these forms accurately. Key West security will review the forms and include those participants on the base access list during the period of the reunion. We are asking those who do carry valid ID cards to also fill out the form, although not all info will be required, so we can double check our attendance list. Stand by for more information on the Security Form process later in January.

Subject: Lodging – MWR and Gateway
The Reunion Committee has made arrangements for all who would like to stay in lodging on Trumbo Point/Truman Annex., even those attendees without w a valid Government ID card. For those that have been away from Navy for a while or may not be aware of some changes in the way the Navy/DOD are managing lodging, the following is provided. Since special arrangements are being made, PLEASE DO NOT CONTACT THEM AT THIS TIME. MWR (Moral, Welfare, Recreation) is an organization that is supported by the Navy Exchange. As a non-appropriated funded (receive no tax payers funding) it relies on funding from profits of the Navy Exchange system and from the users. So, those that use the facilities will pay what is necessary for the facilities to stay open. In Key West, they have 3 types of lodging facilities: 3 bedroom townhouses with full kitchens, 2 bedroom mobile trailers with full kitchens, and RV parks with full hook-ups available. In the past, rates charged depended on paygrades. As of 2013, there is one price for all. Pricing information will be provided in subsequent notes or can be found on the MWR web site.
Gateway is a DOD facility. Essentially it replaces the old BOQ and BEQs as temporary lodging for DOD folks. Rates are by rank with all non-activity duty folks (retirees) eligible on a Space Available (Space A) basis. Rooms are usually of the quality of a mid-priced hotel such as Holiday Inn. Some are refurbished BOQs, as is the case on Trumbo Point where the Gateway is the old “Fly Navy” building. More information will be provided in subsequent notes.
Note from David Patch, Reunion Committee Co-Chair: Over the past couple of years, my wife and I have traveled from Maine to Key West on several occasions. As a retiree, we have stayed on military bases whenever possible. On most bases, these are Gateway facilities. We have stayed in Navy, Army and Air Force bases and have found the Gateways more than acceptable. We have also stayed at both the Key West MWR Mobile Homes (trailers) and the Town Houses. The two of us rattled around in the Town House but was a great way to go. We also found the 2 bedroom mobile home/trailer a comfortable place to stay and will likely stay there again in future visits to Key West.
Posted Sept 2012 –
The reunion planning committee recently visited Key West to start the detailed planning for the first ever Hydrofoil Reunion. Several important accomplishments were achieved:
<>All attendees will be able to stay at Navy lodging facilities in Key West. Arrangements are being made for those normally not authorized (those without a valid government ID card) to use these facilities to stay on the base. Stand by for more information the lodging that will be available and how to make reservations at these facilities
We are also working with the Key West Chamber of Commerce to identify affordable off base lodging as well.
One note, Rt 1 (North Roosevelt Blvd) from the entry onto Key West to past Palm Ave (turn off for Trumbo Point) will be under repair during the reunion so traffic will only be southbound. North bound traffic is being directed to roads on the east side of Key West such as Flagler Ave, well-marked by detour signs.
All attendees will have access to the bases. The committee has made arrangements with NAS Security to make this possible. All attendees will be required to submit a security form; all attendees with valid Government ID card will fill out only parts of the form, but everyone else will have to fill out the complete form. NAS Security will do an abbreviated check on those without current Government IDs. Once approved, a Reunion Participant list will be the document that allows access to the base and the use of the lodging facilities. Stay tuned for additional information.
The current plan is to have a BBQ Friday late afternoon and evening at the picnic area pavilion on Truman Annex. The Banquet will be held Saturday night in the old Fly Navy building on Trumbo Point. Sunday night will be an optional night but the current thinking is to rendezvous at the top of La Concha hotel (www.laconchakeywest.com) on Duval Street to watch the Sunset. The planning committed did that one evening and it was awesome.
As you can see from the “interest list” on this web site, we are well over 100 hydrofoilers expressing an interest in attending. This will be a memorable event and we on the committee are really excited!
