• • The ferry is a hydrofoil-supported catamaran (Hysucat) that was built in Cape Town, South Africa and is presently being used to take tourists from Cape Town to Robben Island (Nelson Mandela’s old prison). DAK Hydrofoil Extrusions

• • Cleaning out my garage, I came across the remains of a long abandoned sail powered hydrofoil project. These include some hydrofoil extrusions that I purchased from David Keiper ~25 years ago.

• • These are the 2″ chord anodized 6061T6 aluminum hydrofoils that he was selling to convert small catamarans to foil-borne operation using a ladder foils in an airplane configuration. The history section of this site gives a good description.

• • I have five – 12′ lengths of lifter stock (Clark-Y section) and two – 12′ lengths & two – 5′ lengths of strut stock (NACA 16-010 section)plus some shorter cut and fitted pieces and a Northwyn Thistle mailsail (70’s materials, but new condition) and a serviceable International 14 genoa.

• • I will sell the lot to a good home for $50 US plus shipping.

• • Sad to read that David had passed on. I met him at Sailtech – 89 and have long been impressed with his work. BTW: A friend reported seeing him and “Williwa” in a S. Pacific port with a sign on the dock reading “Crew Wanted — Chicks Preferred”.

DAK Hydrofoil Extrusions

• • A set of Dave Keiper’s files related to these kits (approx. 270 loose sheets) is still available from IHS. This set includes draft instructions for attaching the kit, cutting patterns for making up the foils from the raw extrusions, extensive email correspondence related to testing and fine-tuning the design, calculations for selecting the foil profile, and many notes on capabilities and prices of potential extrusion suppliers. Dave only completed a couple of kits, and the remaining raw extrusions were sold to various people worldwide. This set of files will be of interest to anyone who with the desire and knowledge to design a hydrofoil kit. Keep in mind that the files are unfinished and unedited, and the kit design was never fully completed and debugged at the level of detail design. Historical Hydrofoils Wanted in France

• • I seek a few old, small Russian hydrofoils in any type of condition (Raketa, Polysie or Belarus hydrofoil). This is to make a houseboats here in Toulouse, the air and space center of France… a few people are interested in this. Also, and in addition to the houseboat project, I want to start a non-profit association to restore one medium or large Russian experimental hydrofoil (Sputnik, Chaika for example)… so I am looking for a good candidate to restore for historical purposes. The hydrofoil for non-profit restoration should be an experimental craft.

Novel hydrofoil prototype for sale

• • After a successful testing program, our 43′ 9-ton foil-assisted trimaran has no further mission or sponsorship. Before we dismantle the craft for salvage, we are offering it for sale as a fully functional operating hydrofoil. The craft can be seen on our web site at

• • . The craft operates at a lift fraction of 85-90% and is fully computer stabilized in height, roll, pitch and yaw with fly-by-wire steering of the twin Yamaha 250 outboards. The hull is 5083 aluminum with an easily removable FRP/sandwich superstructure. With over 2 tons of variable payload capacity, the craft could easily be converted to a 20-pax water taxi. With the current propulsion setup, the cruise speed is 25 knot with a 25 GPH fuel consumption rate. Maximum speed is 30 knots; a bit higher if loaded to maximum displacement; the maximumspeed is actually limited by excessive foil lift rather than the installed propulsion power. Seakeeping is phenomenal with bus-like ride quality in 4′ significant seas at all headings.

Volga 70 for sale

• • I have a Volga 70 export version (Volvo Penta stern drive) for sale. I found it in France 3 years ago and brought it back to my home in Sweden. I have fitted a Ford 350cu V-8 instead of the old 6-cylinder Volvo engine because it was totally rusted and useless. I have continued the restoration but I feel there is little time since I have now been blessed with my second child… The boat runs smoothly and I have had it passed 40 knots with still more throttle to give. The engine is probably too powerful, since the construction is made for approx 32-35 knots and a 100Hp engine, but I find that you can cruise at 30 knots with only half throttle and the boat climbs up on the foils with little or no effort at all, so I have kept the engine in place! However, as I mentioned, I do not seem to have the time I want to, or indeed the boat deserves, so I have decided to sell it. Price: 10 000 EUR E-mail me at:
