Description from Peter Venema, Technical Manager of Fast Flying Ferries, Holland

18th Oct 1998

This picture is a hydrofoil out of Zelenodoka.

The type is a Meteor and is built for rivers and inland lakes. It is almost the same as a Kometa but the draft is only 2.35 meters. We use it as standby for our line service from Amsterdam to IJmuiden in a public transport system which is endorsed by the government of Holland for a trial period of three years. We use this ship in the summer months on a line from Kampen to Amsterdam for tourists. This line is about 65 km with two locks and it takes about two hours with 4 stops.

For our line Amsterdam-Ijmuiden we use Voskhods that came from Kiev in the Ukraine last year. These where built by the MORYA shipyard in the Crimea.

We completely dismantled these ships and rebuilt everything. They now have MAN 2842 LE 402 1100 hp 2300 rpm engines, complete Furuno bridge navigation suite. I am happy to inform you that this set up works very well, especially the engines, (start and forget). We still run the original engines in the Meteor (named PRINS WILLEM-ALEXANDER) M-401 zvesda. These need particular care in operation but we have a lot of experience after three years. Curently our fourth Voskhod is underway from the Crimea to Urk in Holland.
