Description from Graham Taylor, 16th Feb 2004

I have experimented with model hydrofoils for some 15 years and have built two significant models; the ‘MK1’ and ‘Rapier’.

Both models are powered by ‘40‘ IC/glow plug engines and are designed to be rugged and to take the knocks that often occur with IC power.

Both feature ‘breakaway’ surface piercing foil systems which can break off without damaging the hull in the event of a collision. This feature has been tested as both models have, on occasion, run up the bank at full speed!

The MK1 is styled on the Russian surface piercing system, while Rapier is a little closer to the Italian school, but has a ladder/anti-crash front foil arrangement.

The Rapier model also has variable incidence rear foils that are linked to the rudder servo. This enables the model to roll into sharp turns and makes it very manoeuvrable. Plans for building the Rapier model are available from Marine Modelling Magazine, Trapplet Publications in the UK, or directly from me. You can see more about my models on my web site http://www.home-taylor.freeserve.co.uk/
