Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

(Last Update 10-Jan-2006 )

This page is planned, but has not yet been created due to lack of a volunteer. Meanwhile, there are three places to search for your topic of interest: (1) the Posted Messages Bulletin Board (BBS) started in 2002, the Posted Messages Archives containing correspondence prior to start of the BBS, and the search engine at the bottom of the IHS Main Page to search the entire IHS site. Thank you for your patience.

  1.  Why aren't there more hydrofoils?
  2.  Does posting a message on the IHS Bulletin Board cause SPAM?
  3.  I have a school project on hydrofoils... can you send me some information?
  4. How do you put hydrofoils on a sailboard or surfboard?

I have a school project on hydrofoils... can you send me some information? IHS receives many, many variants of this question. Unfortunately the question is so broad in scope that entire books can be (and have been!) written about the subject. The Advanced Marine Vehicles CD-ROMs offered by IHS have a lot of information on the subject, especially the ANCVE study on CD #1. Also, we encourage you to use the IHS website to the fullest because it contains many resources. For example:

  • A large bibliography of technical references is posted at http://www.foils.org/refs.htm
  • A large bibliography of popular and trade magazines and books is posted at http://www.foils.org/refpop.htm
  • A large list of links to websites that deal with AMV-related subjects is at http://www.foils.org/linksout.htm . As an example, if your focus is on public transportation, there is a link on this page to the informative US Dept of Transportation Regional Ferry Plan for the San Francisco Bay area
  • An archive page of messages related to student projects is provided at http://www.foils.org/students.htm
  • A directory of all the archived messages is at http://www.foils.org/posted.htm. You should feel free to contact anyone who has posted messages of interest to ask for help or additional information.

After using those resources, we encourage you to refine your general question down to one or several very specific and short questions and post them on our Bulletin Board (BBS) accessible from the main web page at http://www.foils.org. The more specific you can be with your question, the more likely you are to receive satisfactory responses. And don't forget to mention the type of craft or ship you are inquiring about... motor power, sail power, or human power? commercial, military, or sport? full size or scale model? It makes a difference!

Does posting a message on the IHS Bulletin Board cause SPAM? According to the site at www.nags.org/, if you contribute articles to usenet newsgroups and bulletin boards, whether work-related or leisure-related, you'll probably have had your e-mail address automatically extracted by one of the many programs on the market which can collect e-mail addresses this way. This trawling for e-mail addresses to send stuff annoys many people, and the problem with this junk mail is only getting worse. The collection of e-mail addresses in this way, and the sending of SPAM is illegal in many countries (including the UK and the US). However, most people do not have the time nor the resources nor the inclination to complain about every SPAM received. You don't have to post your email address to receive spam. Many spammers simply try every possible combination of characters to form userids, and then send email to all the major internet service providers such as hotmail and yahoo. So any new email account, even if unused, is likely to receive spam within a few hours or days after being activated. Email arriving at the IHS address webmaster@foils.org is currently running at about 60% SPAM despite the use of Spam filters. To put it in perspective, however, the webmaster's personal snail mail box is currently yielding about 90% junk mail. For information on the campaign against SPAM, please visit http://spam.abuse.net/spam/ or The Electronic Frontier Foundation

How do you put hydrofoils on a sailboard or surfboard? Historical conversation appears in the correspondence archives page for this topic. More recent correspondence (since 2002) can be searched on the BBS. Be sure to check out Rich Miller's informative and illustrated technical paper about his hydrofoil sailboard (Adobe Acrobat file, approx. 0.9 meg in size). Rich's current email address is in his paper; if you email him with questions, please include webmaster@foils.org on the "copy to:" line. Specific questions not covered in the site should be posted on the BBS for a response.

Still didn't find what you were looking for? Contact the webmaster by email... we may know a source for your information. Also, please suggest new topics that should be covered in this site. This search feature operates with key words. You can search for any of the words you type in, all of the words, or the exact phrase. Do not ask a complete question in the style of "Ask Jeeves" because you will likely get too many irrelevant citations if you do.

Please forgive and ignore the commercial advertising that our search engine provider recently added to the search results page. IHS neither endorses nor recommends products and services. We are in the process of finding a new search engine provider that has no ads.
